Disclaimer: The European Energy Inventory Storage dataset is mainly based on public data and data from Wood Mackenzie. Wood Mackenzie Limited, subject to any additional data modifications and/or input provided by the EC or any of its authorised 3rd party contributor.
Some of the capacities (MWh) have been estimated, for more details please check the interactive map.
Technologies covered
Electrochemical energy storage: Electricity stored in batteries via electrochemical reactions, currently dominated by lithium-ion technology, with other types including lead-acid, flow, and sodium-ion batteries.
Mechanical energy storage: Energy stored in mechanical form, almost entirely provided by pumped-storage hydropower, with CAES representing a small share.
Thermal energy storage: Energy stored as heat and released later for electricity generation or heat supply, typically using molten salt, hot water, or phase-change materials.
Chemical energy storage: Energy storage through the conversion of electricity to hydrogen.
