Since April 2020, the JRC Smart Electricity Systems and Interoperability team, part of the JRC.C.3 Unit for Energy Distribution, Market and Security, is taking part in a new Horizon 2020 EU project, ERIGrid 2.0. The project consortium comprises 20 partner organisations from 13 countries, including Universities, Research Institutes, and a Grid Operator, and has a total budget of 10 million Euros.
The project is a successor of two previous research projects. The FP7 Research and Innovation project DERri (2009-2013) focused on the provision of access around distributed energy resources, in order to tackle the integration of renewables. In a second phase, the H2020 Research and Innovation project ERIGrid (2015-2020) has successfully enlarged the provided portfolio of services in to the system-level covering mainly electric power system, information and communication issues. Now, based on the results from the ERIGrid project, the successor project ERIGrid 2.0 will expand the research services and tools of research infrastructures for validating smart energy networks with the electric power grid as the main backbone. Committed to the holistic and cyber-physical systems-based validation approach, ERIGrid 2.0 will foster system-level support and education for industrial and academic researchers in power and energy systems research and technology development.
The JRC Smart Electricity Systems and Interoperability team participates in most of the Network and Joint Research Activities of the project, as well as in the Transnational Access Activity for Facilities for Smart Energy Systems Integration and Validation. For the latter, JRC will open its Smart Grid facilities in Petten (NL) and Ispra (IT) to engineers and researchers from all over Europe in the domains of power system testing, smart grids and distributed energy, through periodic open calls for project proposals (3-4 per year). After a rigorous selection process from a selection panel of experts, the selected researchers will receive free funding to access the lab facilities (including travelling, accommodation, and lab access) and perform their own experimental research.
