Technical committeeTypeAcronymIEC 61140CommitteePublished year2001Description
IEC 61140:2016 RLV contains both the official IEC International Standard and its Redline version. The Redline version is available in English only and provides you with a quick and easy way to compare all the changes between the official IEC Standard and its previous edition.
IEC 61140:2016 applies to the protection of persons and livestock against electric shock. The intent is to give fundamental principles and requirements which are common to electrical installations, systems and equipment or necessary for their coordination, without limitations with regard to the magnitude of the voltage or current, or the type of current, and for frequencies up to 1 000 Hz. It has the status of a basic safety publication in accordance with IEC Guide 104. This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition published in 2001 and Amendment 1:2004. This edition constitutes a technical revision.

IEC 60479-2:2019 describes the effects on the human body when a sinusoidal alternating current in the frequency range above 100 Hz passes through it.
The effects of current passing through the human body for:
– alternating sinusoidal current with DC components,
– alternating sinusoidal current with phase control, and
– alternating sinusoidal current with multicycle control
are given but are only deemed applicable for alternating current frequencies from 15 Hz up to 100 Hz.
Means of extending the frequency of applicability of pure sinusoids to a frequency of 150 kHz are given and means of examining random complex irregular waveforms are given.
This document describes the effects of current passing through the human body in the form of single and multiple successive unidirectional rectangular impulses, sinusoidal impulses and impulses resulting from capacitor discharges. The values specified are deemed to be applicable for impulse durations from 0,1 ms up to and including 10 ms.
This document only considers conducted current resulting from the direct application of a source of current to the body, as does IEC 60479-1. It does not consider current induced within the body caused by its exposure to an external electromagnetic field.
This basic safety publication is primarily intended for use by technical committees in the preparation of standards in accordance with the principles laid down in IEC Guide 104 and ISO/IEC Guide 51. It is not intended for use by manufacturers or certification bodies. One of the responsibilities of a technical committee is, wherever applicable, to make use of basic safety publications in the preparation of its publications. The requirements, test methods or test conditions of this basic safety publication will not apply unless specifically referred to or included in the relevant publications.
This first edition cancels and replaces IEC TS 60479-2:2017. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to IEC TS 60479 2:2017:
a) change in status from Technical Specification to International Standard. -

IEC 60479-1:2018(E) provides basic guidance on the effects of shock current on human beings and livestock.
This basic safety publication is primarily intended for use by technical committees in the preparation of standards in accordance with the principles laid down in IEC Guide 104 and lSO/lEC Guide 51. It is not intended for use by manufacturers or certification bodies. -
Technical committeeTypeAcronymIEC 60364-8-2CommitteePublished year2018Description
IEC 60364-8-2:2018 provides additional requirements, measures and recommendations for design, erection and verification of all types of low-voltage electrical installation according to IEC 60364-1:2005, Clause 11, including local production and/or storage of energy in order to ensure compatibility with the existing and future ways to deliver electrical energy to current-using equipment or to the public network by means of local sources. Such electrical installations are designated as prosumer’s electrical installations (PEIs).
This document also provides requirements for proper behaviour and actions of PEIs in order to efficiently obtain sustainable and safe operations of these installations when integrated into smart grids.
These requirements and recommendations apply, within the scope of IEC 60364 (all parts), for new installations and modification of existing installations. -

IEC 60364-7-753:2014 applies to embedded electric heating systems for surface heating. It also applies to electric heating systems for de-icing or frost prevention or similar applications. Both indoor and outdoor systems are covered. Heating systems for industrial and commercial applications complying with relevant parts of IEC 60519, IEC 62395 and IEC 60079 are not covered. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2005 and constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition:
- the title has been changed from "Floor and ceiling heating systems" to "Heating cables and embedded heating systems" to align with the revised scope;
- the scope has been extended and now covers embedded electric heating systems for surface heating, also electric heating systems for de-icing or frost prevention or similar applications, and covers both indoor and outdoor systems. This includes heating systems for: walls, ceiling, floors, roofs, drainpipes, gutters, pipes, stairs, roadways, non-hardened compacted areas (e.g. football fields, lawns);
- for wall heating systems, this standard contains additional requirements (e.g. metal sheath/enclosure/grid) to protect against the effects of overheating caused by a short-circuit between live conductors due to penetration of an embedded heating unit;
- from heating units delivered from the manufacturer without exposed-conductive-parts, this standard requires a metallic mesh grid covering. This has been reduced to 3 mm for wall heating systems;
- this standard now requires that electric heating systems shall be selected and erected so as to avoid any harmful influence between the heating system and any electrical or non-electrical installations envisaged;
- and this standard covers surface temperatures and now refers the reader to the appropriate IEC guide. -
