Abstract

Energy Smart Appliances (ESA) are the instrument to transform houses/buildings into smart. They also empower consumers in becoming active players of the smart grid. However, a wide-scale deployment of ESA may induce interoperability (IOP) issues. Therefore, a concrete approach is needed to reassure that IOP is preserved in the system while ESA are introduced in the market.
DG ENER and the DG JRC join their forces in a common project to provide support on the development of policy proposals for ESA. The actions taken so far include: literature review and consolidation of input from relevant sources on the IOP of ESA, development of Use Cases for ESA, definition of principles of data sharing among ESA and other actors.
This technical report aims at collecting information about ESA: messages exchanged; types manufactured and forwarded to the market; and their IOP or societal issues. It analyses the results from a survey on the IOP of ESA, revealing the current situation of ESA regarding their state-of-the-art features and their IOP barriers. All possible stakeholders were included to ensure a realistic representation.
Additionally, this work represents the first direct contribution from ESA manufacturers (and others), which paves the way towards a European Code of Conduct (CoC) for IOP of ESA. The future CoC will be based on the information here collected and from future discussions with all interested parties. The project final scope to attract as many stakeholders as possible willing to adhere to this CoC.
