Wholesale Energy Market Integrity and Transparency

In the complex landscape of energy markets, ensuring fair and transparent operations is essential to foster competition, protecting consumers, and promoting a sustainable energy future. The key regulatory framework addressing these concerns is the Regulation on Wholesale Energy Market Integrity and Transparency (REMIT). This regulation plays a pivotal role in maintaining the integrity of wholesale energy markets.

Background and context

REMIT, established in 2011, is a comprehensive regulatory framework designed to enhance the integrity and transparency of wholesale energy markets (electricity and gas) in the EU. It aims at preventing market abuse, ensuring fair competition, and contributing to the overall efficiency of energy trading. The regulation introduces rules and disclosure obligations for market participants, including energy producers, traders, and grid operators.

Our role

The JRC has supported ACER in increasing the transparency of the energy market in different areas. The analysis of data quality and introduction of price indices are suited to increase the transparency of market participant behaviour from a top-down approach. In addition, using robust models to predict hourly electricity prices provides significantly better market forecasts, against which one can compare the actual electricity prices and possibly spot inconsistencies.
