The project entitled 'Growing Renewable Energy Applications and Technologies' (GREAT) seeks to accelerate the deployment of Smart Grid systems in North West Europe. The project is designed to stimulate SMEs to develop innovation and create employment by developing synergies between Smart Grids, Renewable Energy technology and Distributive Generation.

Four European cities/regions (Barcelona, Gipuzkoa-San Sebastian, Newcastle and Reggio Emilia) have come together to demonstrate the role of ICT solutions for cities and citizens in addressing shortcomings of electro mobility. Electric power solutions have proven to offer a potentially ground-breaking solution for more energy-efficient and less petrol-dependent vehicles and transport systems. The consortium aims to integrate regional initiatives which have been established all over Europe.

The project envisions the analysis, testing and deployment of a multi transport mode network using today’s road infrastructure and railways coupled with an electric car charging network of battery switch stations and charge spots powered by renewable energy along with intelligent transport systems. It is an innovative project that will serve as a technology roadmap for creating a pan European electric car network.
