SGS - Smart Grid Solar

Start and end dates:
January, 2013 to December, 2017
Prevailing Stage of Development:
Research & Development
Brief description and/or other information regarding the project:
The main goal of the project smart grid solar is to develop methods and technologies in order to increase the amount of renewable energy sources (particularly photovoltaics). Solar electrics and also wind energy, is dependent on the fluctuating weather conditions and therefore in the current form cannot be used to adress the base load supply.A scenario of using more than 25% of solar electrics is only realistic, if methods are found to increase i.e. the internal consumption or to invoke methods for intermediate storage of energy. Effects on the grid should produce two effects: Firstly, it will lead to a stabilization of the power grid. Secondly, the storages have to be adapted in order to store solar electricity for longer periods of time. This will enable to also serve the basic load. The interdisciplinary research project smart grid solar combines knowledge and research in different areas. The researchers are investigating in new technologies in photovoltaics as well as storage techniques. Additionally, the power grids, serving as main part of the smart grid, are analyzed, modeled, simulated and optimized in order to improve stability and lifetime. Different research groups from grid engineering, to information technology, mathematics and economics work together, to develop future scenarios of the power grid.
