In line with the mission of the Joint Research Centre (JRC), the aim of the JRC Energy, Transport & Climate Directorate is to provide scientific and technical support for the conception, development, implementation and monitoring of community policies related to energy, transport and climate.

We are a multidisciplinary and multicultural team of JRC researchers - based both in Petten (NL) and Ispra (IT) - acting as in-house scientific consultants for EU policy-making on the on-going transformations of smart electricity systems.

Gianluca Fulli (Ispra, IT)

Gianluca Fulli leads the activities of the Smart Electricity Systems and Interoperability team at the European Commission, Joint Research Centre, where he is Deputy Head of the Energy Security, Distribution and Markets Unit.

Michel Vandenbergh (Petten, NL)

Michel Vandenbergh received his degree of electromechanical engineering from the “Université Libre de Bruxelles” in 1987, and his PhD in energy engineering in 1997 from the “Ecole des Mines de Paris”.

Catalin Felix Covrig (Petten, NL)

Catalin Felix Covrig

Catalin Felix Covrig holds a Diplomat Engineer Degree (5 years) in Mechanical Engineering (minor in energy generation and supply) and a Doctorate Degree, both from the University Politehnica of Bucharest, Romania.

Tilemahos Efthimiadis (Petten, NL)

Tilemahos Efthimiadis holds a PhD in Monetary Economics from the University of Macedonia, Greece (2006), an MSc in International Economics from the Athens University of Economics and Business (2001), and a BA in Economics (AUTH, 2000).

Evangelos Kotsakis (Ispra, IT)

Evangelos Kotsakis received his B.Sc. degree in computer science from the University of Athens, Greece, his M.Sc. and Ph.D degrees in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the University of Salford, England.

Anna Mengolini (Petten, NL)

Anna Mengolini holds a MSc in Chemical Engineering from the University of Bologna and a MSc in Environmental Engineering from Politecnico of Torino.

Philip Minnebo (Petten, NL)

Philip Minnebo is an electromechanical engineer (process technology) displaying twenty year experience as research engineer, mainly in the field of materials characterization and laboratory management.

Stefano Tarantola (Ispra, IT)

Stefano is a Scientific Officer at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission. He graduated in Engineering in 1992 and received his PhD in Science and Technologies for Engineering at the Polytechnic of Milan in 1996.

Silvia Vitiello (Petten, NL)

Silvia Vitiello conducts research on economic and regulatory issues related to smart grids deployment with the "Smart Electricity Systems and Interoperability" group at the European Commission, Institute of Energy and Transport, Joint Research Centre.

Heinz Wilkening (Petten, NL)

Heinz Wilkening has a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Hannover. He has more than 15 years of working experience in research organizations and automotive industry.

Nikoleta Andreadou received the B.Sc. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Democritus University of Thrace, Greece, the M.Sc degree in “Mobile Communication Systems” from University of Surrey, U.K., and the Ph.D. degree in Telecommunications from Aristotle University ...

Mircea Ardelean (Petten, NL)

Mircea Ardelean got his BSc in Geography at West University of Timisoara and holds a PhD degree from Babes-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca, Romania. He had previously worked in academics where his main attributes were teaching and research in the field of Cartography and GIS.

Stamatios Chondrogiannis (Ispra, IT)

Stamatios Chondrogiannis graduated from the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 2001.

Marco Flammini (Ispra, IT)

Marco Flammini has a bachelor degree in Mechanical engineering from the Politecnico of Milano, and a double master degree in Renewable Energy from Ecole Polytechnique, France. He is a PhD student of the Politecnico of Torino.

Gianluca Flego (Petten, NL)

Gianluca Flego holds a first degree in philosophy from the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa, with a strong focus on social sciences. He switched then to economics through an MA from Collegio Carlo Alberto, and MPhil from Cambridge and a PhD from Bocconi University.

Alexandre Lucas (Ispra, IT)

Alexandre Lucas received his Electrical Egineering degree in 2007 from the Instituto Suerior de Engeharia de Lisboa and in 2009 his Master in Business and Industrial Strategy from the Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão.

Antonios Marinopoulos (Petten, NL)

Antonios Marinopoulos received a Diploma in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2003 from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece.

Ioulia Papaioannou (Petten, NL)

Ioulia Papaioannou received the B.Sc. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece in 2004 where she continued her Ph.D. studies in Energy. She received her doctorate in 2010.

Marta Poncela (Ispra, IT)

Marta Poncela received a PhD in Automation and Systems Engineering from the University of Valladolid, Spain in 2012 and a MSc in electrical engineering in 1998.

Giuseppe Prettico (Ispra, IT)

Giuseppe Prettico holds a Ph.D. in Photonics (The Institute of Photonic Science, ICFO) and a Master in Energy Efficiency and Energy Markets (Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya).

Arturs Purvins (Petten, NL)

Arturs Purvins has over 5 years experience in techno-economic analysis of electricity systems and in smart grid application development for energy management systems.

Amanda Spisto (Petten, NL)

Amanda Spisto holds a degree in Economics a MS in Environmental Economics and Territorial studies and a PhD in Environmental Law and Economics.

Julija Vasiljevska (Petten, NL)
